Overview of Content Covered:
-Traditional African Music, The Blues, Jazz, Selected musical styles of Africa, Central America, and South America
Goals: What will I know / be able to do after this class?
-Understand the sounds of traditional African music, how it arrived in the U.S., and what elements are in U.S. music
-Understand elements of the blues and what performers were important for development of blues
-Understand where/how jazz originated and the different genres of jazz music
-Understand elements of non-Western music, reasons that cultures perform music, and similarities/differences with American music
Expectations:
Listen Show Group Awareness
Follow Directions Be Respectful
Come Prepared Participate Completely
What to expect if following expectations:
If the class, as a whole follows class expectations, we will have 1-2 special music days where students can listen to music or learn about a new musical style

Students who have trouble following class expectations after three warnings must serve a detention and parents will be notified. Points will be deducted from that week’s contribution grade.
Grading:
H (Honors) 90%-100% Class Contribution – 40%
S (Satisfactory) 80%-89% based on Homework/Recap It’s – 20%
N (Needs Improvement) 66%-79% Quizzes/Tests – 20%
U (Unsatisfactory) 0%-65% Projects – 20%
How Will I / My Parents Know How I am Doing?
Students will get a class contribution grade out of 10 each week. This grade will be posted online via Gradebook. All students will receive a grading rubric at the end of each quarter that specifies where students are excelling / need to make improvements. Please see the grading rubric on back!
Materials Needed:
A durable pocket folder with fasteners to hold loose leaf paper for notes OR ½ inch binder with paper
pencil and eraser to be kept in folder/binder
*students may leave materials in class or take them home, but are expected to have materials every day!
